On Bonaire
Coral Resource Management gives advice, guidance and training to STINAPA and the Bonaire National Marine Park (BNMP) management and staff as well as supporting the Island Government Department of Nature and Environment, Aliansa, Sea Turtle Club Bonaire and other local non profit organizations.
In order to promote conservation and awareness of the islands coral reefs and other marine resources, Coral Resource Management writes weekly articles for the local English language newspaper "The Bonaire Reporter". These articles are being translated into Papiamento so that they can be republished in the local newspaper "Extra".
Coral Resource Management has designed and is implementing two projects in Lac (working with conch fishermen and setting up a certification course for kayak guides) and is guiding the establishment of Fish Protected Areas (No Take Marine Reserves) within the Bonaire National Marine Park. This work is being funded by STINAPA, Bonaire in part from a grant supplied by World Wildlife Fund for Nature, Holland.
In the Antilles
Coral Resource Management is preparing the Antillean component of a proposed marine transboundary World Heritage Site nomination which will include the Southern Caribbean Islands of Los Roques and Las Aves (in Venezuela), Curacao, Klein Curacao, Bonaire and Klein Bonaire (in the Netherlands Antilles). This work is being funded by the World Heritage Centre.
Coral Resource Management is co-ordinating and representing the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance, a newly formed umbrella organization which includes both the terrestrial and marine parks of the Dutch Caribbean islands of St Maarten, Statia, Saba, Curacao and Bonaire. This work is being funded by the National Postcode Lottery in Holland together with IUCN Holland.
Internationally
Coral Resource Management will be visiting St Vincent and the Grenadines at the request of the Friends of the Tobago Cays in May 2004 to give presentations to their local communities as part of an education week.
Coral Resource Management is leading an exchange programme which will give the local fishing community on Bonaire the opportunity to learn first hand about the successful establishment of No Take Marine Reserves on St Lucia. A group of St Lucian Marine Park staff and fishermen from the Soufriere Marine Management Area will visit Bonaire in June with a similar group from Bonaire due to visit St Lucia later in the year. This work is being funded by the International Coral Reef Initiaitive and DEFRA, UK.
